Kiwanis of Benicia is proud to sponsor and mentor the incredibly gifted students of the BHS Key Club. Nationally acknowledged for their volunteerism, fundraising and community service, our members do all we can to support their leadership opportunities and educational success.
Kiwanis Scholarships
Scholarships, and fundraising to support the incredible graduating seniors each year, is truly the heart and soul of Kiwanis of Benicia. Each year we strive to give more to more of the deserving college, or trade school, bound students of Benicia and Liberty High Schools. Our Annual Golf Tournament is a major fundraiser for our Scholarship Program.
Community Meal
Kiwanis of Benicia cooks! Each month we provide dinners for St. Paul’s Community Meal program on the second Monday, and 5th Wednesday, if there is one. As a club we prepare and pack as many as 525 dinners each month.
Literacy - Benicia Reads
Our goal is to ensure Benicia’s children are reading at grade level by third grade. We do this by collaborating with Benicia Reads, which is a partnership between Benicia Unified School District, the City of Benicia, and the community. Together we host fun and educational events that encourage literacy development in our children. Every year we work with the school district and Bookshop Benicia to ensure each 3rd grader begins the summer with a new book, and our summer reading program donates nearly 400 age-appropriate books each year.
Charter Cub Scout Pack #108
The Kiwanis Club of Benicia charters Benicia’s Cub Scout Pack 108, a successful sprouting ground for of our town’s many Eagle Scouts. Pack 108 serves girls and boys from Kindergarten through 5th grades, and is now Benicia's only Cub Scout Pack. This early Scouting program gets children out into the great outdoors, marching in our town’s parades, creating model race cars for their annual Pinewood Derby, and so much more while also helping them to build resiliency, confidence and practical life skills.
AEDs in Schools Program
Schools are gathering places and are used for so much more than school. We are committed to ensuring that AEDs are accessible in all schools in the Benicia Unified School District so that these life-saving devices are available should an individual collapse in sudden cardiac arrest.We have successfully placed Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in Benicia High School, Liberty High School, Benicia Middle School, Joe Henderson Elementary, Matthew Turner Elementary, Mary Farmer Elementary, and Robert Semple Elementary.
Easter Egg Hunt
Kiwanis Club of Benicia, along with the Benicia High School Key Club, hosts a free annual Easter egg hunt in City Park for children ages 2 to 8 years. There is dancing, food, games, people selling crafts, and entertainment by local groups. The egg hunt is our club’s longest running community service project, started in 1962
Kiwanis Summer Tutoring Program
The Kiwanis Summer Tutoring Program was launched in 2022 to help elementary and middle school students whose education was impacted by the COVID pandemic. The program runs for 7 weeks during the summer and is designed to enhance student learning and confidence. Hundreds of students have participated and been tutored by our Key Club members.
